Paris in December 2026 with Kids: the Christmas Holidays Plan
December in Paris with children means two weeks of French school holidays, from Saturday 19 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027, and a city that lights up from late afternoon. It is also the month when the sun sets before 5 pm, which many parents experience as a constraint. We turned it into an argument: the best outing of the month is precisely the one that starts as night falls.
What to do in Paris in December 2026 with kids: the Origins of Paris time-travel walk on the banks of the Seine, in late afternoon as the city lights up (from age 8, one hour), the Christmas market and ice rink in the Tuileries until 3 January, the boulevard Haussmann department-store windows and the Champs-Élysées lights, and, on rainy days, the natural history museum or the City of Paris’s free museums. Book early whatever can be booked: holiday slots go fast.
The outing of the month: Paris travelling back in time at nightfall

On the quays, the binoculars are held in front of the eyes like ordinary binoculars: no closed headset, and children stay with their parents.
In December, the sun sets around 4:55 pm in Paris. For The Origins of Paris, that is the perfect hour. The guided walk lasts one hour, along 1.2 km of riverbank between the pont Louis-Philippe and the île Saint-Louis, and at each stop our virtual-reality binoculars bring the great scenes of the city’s history back exactly where they happened: Roman Lutetia, where a Gallic rampart has just been found under the Hôtel-Dieu, the Viking siege of 885, the construction of Notre-Dame, the great flood of 1910. And one scene made for the season: the frozen Seine, Parisians walking on the ice-bound river, to be watched with a woolly hat on and the real river in front of you. In the late-afternoon slots, the visit begins in winter light and ends in evening Paris, with Notre-Dame and the Conciergerie lit above the reconstructions.
Why it is the family outing of December: it is open from age 8, in French, English or Spanish, the binoculars are held in front of the eyes without cutting the child off from the group, and an hour outside on foot is the right dose before heading back into the warm. The starting point is two minutes from Pont Marie metro, and the île Saint-Louis waits at the end with its shop windows and hot chocolate. During the holidays, book ahead: late-afternoon sessions are the first to sell out.
Christmas markets, ice rinks and lights

The Champs-Élysées in December: the illuminations shine until early January.
The big one for children is La Magie de Noël in the Tuileries, from 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027: around a hundred chalets, rides and a 1,200-square-metre open-air ice rink, a stone’s throw from the Louvre. Allow half a day, and come early at weekends. On boulevard Haussmann, the animated windows of the department stores remain the most effective free show in Paris with under-tens, and the Champs-Élysées illuminations, switched on since mid-November, shine until early January. Finally, every winter, the Jardin d’Acclimatation turns into a Christmas village, with winter rides for the youngest.
Rainy and freezing days
There will be some. The safe bets are those of our October half-term plan, still valid: the Grande Galerie de l’Évolution at the Jardin des Plantes (closed on Tuesdays and on 25 December), the Cité des enfants at the Villette (booking essential during the holidays), and the free permanent collections of the musée Carnavalet, where the history of Paris is told through its objects: the ideal way to carry on, in the warm, what the children saw on the riverbanks. If the rain lasts all day, the covered passages of the 19th century were built for exactly this weather.
The right call for each age
- Under 8: the Tuileries and its rides, the boulevard Haussmann windows, the Jardin d’Acclimatation, the Cité des enfants.
- 8 and over: The Origins of Paris in late afternoon, then the île Saint-Louis; the Grande Galerie de l’Évolution and the Carnavalet for cold days.
- Teenagers: the Origins work very well too, the Tuileries rink in the evening, the Catacombs for thrill-seekers, and our selection for teens for the rest.
December questions, answered
When are the French Christmas holidays in 2026? From Saturday 19 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027, for all school zones. The two busiest weeks of the year in Paris for family activities: book before mid-December.
Can you do The Origins of Paris in winter with children? Yes, and it is the season we like best: an hour’s walk on the riverbanks, binoculars that do not cut the child off from the family, and night falling during the visit. Dress warmly, as for any winter walk, and check the sessions offered over the holidays on the booking site.
What to do in Paris on Christmas Day with kids? Most museums are closed that day; the illuminations, the windows and the Christmas markets are not. A walk along the quays and through the île Saint-Louis remains the best option for the afternoon.
In short
Paris in December 2026 with children: the Origins of Paris time-travel walk on the riverbanks at nightfall at the top of the programme, then the Tuileries and its rink until 3 January, the windows and the illuminated Champs-Élysées, and the museums for rainy days. Two weeks of holidays from 19 December to 4 January, a city that lights up at 5 pm, and the Seine to let two thousand years of history flow past.
