Things to do near the Eiffel Tower: 12 walkable ideas

You have your summit ticket (or you don't), now what? The Eiffel Tower district deserves better than a rushed selfie between two queues. Here are 12 ideas, all walkable, tested by a team that knows the area particularly well: our immersive experience lives on rue Dupont des Loges, five minutes from the Champ-de-Mars.

The smart must-dos

1. Relive the birth of the Tower, where it happened

Full disclosure: this one is ours, and it is rated 5/5. The Symbol of Paris immerses you for one hour in Gustave Eiffel's workshops, the 1889 World's Fair, the Roaring Twenties and the Resistance, in virtual reality, on the Champ-de-Mars itself. From age 8, €19-28, tours in English. The ideal alternative when summit tickets are sold out (and the perfect complement when they aren't).

2. The Champ-de-Mars picnic, done properly

Stock up on rue Cler (cheesemongers, greengrocers, bakeries, the most famous market street in Paris), then settle on the lawns near the École Militaire end, far less crowded than the Tower side. Bonus: you are standing on the former military parade ground that hosted five World's Fairs.

3. The Trocadéro view… at the right time

The absolute postcard, at dawn or after 9 pm. On summer afternoons the esplanade is packed; at sunrise you get it to yourself, golden light included.

The culture fix

4. Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac

Arts of Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas in a Jean Nouvel building wrapped in greenery, a 10-minute walk away. The living wall alone is worth the detour.

5. Musée de l'Homme and its hidden view

Fascinating anthropology inside, and one of the most underrated panoramas of Paris from its 2nd-floor café, dead-on axis with the Tower.

6. Les Invalides, fifteen minutes away

The golden dome, Napoleon's tomb and the Army Museum, the natural next stop for history lovers, up the esplanade from the river.

Photo spots (without the crowds)

7. Pont Bir-Hakeim

The metal arches made famous by the movies, perfect for low-angle shots of the Tower.

8. Île aux Cygnes and the "other" Statue of Liberty

A little-known tree-lined walkway in the middle of the Seine, ending at the Statue of Liberty replica, a guaranteed Franco-American wink on your photos.

9. Rue de l'Université

The classic Haussmann perspective: the Tower framed by the façades of the 7th.

To wind down

10. The riverbanks towards Pont de l'Alma

Pedestrian and peaceful in the morning, lively at night, the ideal walking link between the district and the rest of Paris.

11. A crêpe (the real address)

The Champ-de-Mars stands will do; the crêperies of rue du Gros-Caillou will delight. Two streets of detour, two levels of crêpe.

12. The 1900s carousel at the foot of the Tower

Vintage, photogenic, still spinning: the ride that closes the kids' day (and everyone else's).
